Overview of search results
The search results area is located below the query area.
In the search results area you can view the following:

Categories of results that are displayed under Focused information on
-
One or more pages of Answers & Citations results
- Results having to do with companies and technologies
The contents of the results area looks different depending on the current view of your search results.
Search results
General category types
Click the links under Focused information on to display the contents of any one of the following general category types:
Sunburst Viewer
Goldfire provides users with the opportunity to work with an enhanced, visual representation of the category types and specific categories associated with your search results. This feature enables you to see the composition of returned search results based on the category types as well as the related categories and answers.
- If the viewer is minimized and not visible, click
to expand the viewer.
- Click on a link to a general category type to display a visual representation of the specific categories and answers within a category type.
Sorting category boxes
You can sort answers in each of the category boxes by export content, alphabetically, and by frequency. Click next to any of the answer boxes to select how you want to sort answers from a particular category
Exporting category boxes
You can export answers from each of the category boxes to a file:
- Click
at the top of any of the category boxes
- Click Export Content
- In the Export Results dialog box, select a file type
- Click Export
Query splitting for categories
When you conduct a multi-term query, Goldfire automatically detects and then splits your query into functional parts. These meaningful parts are displayed as options in drop-down list under Focused Information on, enabling you to browse facts in the documents of your search results that are focused on the concept you selected.
For example, If you search for renewable energy consumption, then Goldfire recognizes and splits your query into the following distinct parts: renewable energy consumption, renewable energy, and consumption. You can click on any of the three options in the drop-down list to display the categories and facts for it, and then you can browse the facts in the documents in your search results.
Query splitting for categories is currently only available for queries conducted in English.
Companies and Technologies
The general category types include a Companies link. Use the Companies link to display search results from patent collections that include the following:
- A list of companies (patent assignees) that develop a technology that is related to your query.
- A list of companies (patent assignees) that develop a technology that is related to your query, as well as the corresponding number of patents that were applied for by each company. For up to five selected companies, you can compare the number of patents that were applied for each year for a particular technology, by generating a patent activity bar graph for these companies.
- A table of patenting activity by inventors who are working with the technology that is related to your query.
- A table of bibliographic data for the patents that were returned by your query, including Publication Number, Publication Date, Title, and Assignee.
Filters panel
The filters panel at the left of the search results area lists a variety of filters that you can use to filter the display of your search results. The filters are grouped in several categories. To apply one or more filters to your search results, select the check boxes next to the filters that you want to apply.
Translating search results
In the results area, all results in the languages that you chose for translation are translated into the language that you selected.

Saving search results
Save search results and a More results citation to My Data, or export just search results to a file.
To select the main snippets to either save to My Data or to export, click the check box to the left of the item(s) in the query results pane, and then click the Save drop-down arrow in the top-right of the query results pane.

Search results exceptions
It is possible that when you conduct a query, you might not see any search results. For detailed information about why your query did not result in any search results, see search results exceptions.

For users with Microsoft Edge as their default browser, highlighting does not automatically appear in query results. You must first install the Highlighting extension.
- Using Microsoft Edge, type edge://extensions/ in the URL address box, and then click Chrome Web Store, which appears after the Can't find what you're looking for? prompt.
- Using the Chrome Web Store tab, type Highlighting to locate the extension.
- Click Add to Chrome and then click Add extension in the popup box that appears to install the extension.
